Prospectus - Health Policy

Aim

To provide a healthy environment where the specific health needs of each student are catered for and monitored maintaining confidentiality. 

  • The school will provide a balanced diet to promote healthy eating.

 

  • All students will be weighed and their height measured monthly.  Students on weight reduction diets or special diets will be monitored more often.

 

  • Students will take part in regular exercise both within the academic and extended curriculum.

 

  • Students will be encouraged to take appropriate degrees of rest and sleep.

 

  • Academic and extended curriculum will address the need for healthy eating, personal hygiene, smoking, exercise, drug abuse, sexual and personal relationships including STD/STI’s, HIV/Aids, contraception etc.

 

  • Designated staff will discuss any student health issues with students.  However, students should be encouraged to talk first to their keyworker or teacher.

 

  • Students records will be checked annually and any immunizations required will be organized with the school GP or the parents, whichever is appropriate.

 

  • All students will be registered with the local GP unless there are exceptional circumstances.  The school will liaise with the surgery on a regular basis with regard to all students.

 

  • School will arrange dental/vision/hearing checks for students in exceptional circumstances.  Parents are however expected in so far as possible to arrange these for holiday periods.  Parents are requested to notify the school of any dental/vision/ hearing needs identified by appointments at home.

 

  • The school will offer annual flu immunization in conjunction with the local GP.

 

  • It is the responsibility of the parents to provide the school with accurate, up to date medical information.

 

  • Annual checks will be made by the keyworker of details kept in the medical file on their keychildren.  This check will be recorded and dated in the file.

 

  • The school is responsible for checking that any contagious or notifiable diseases are notified to the appropriate authority either by the Doctor or the school.

 

  • School will notify parents if the student is seriously unwell or unwell for a protracted period.  At least one member of staff on each residential team, teaching team and ancillary staff team will have a current first aid certificate.
  • A record of any medical intervention, i.e. homely remedies or first aid, required above those on the medication sheets to be recorded in the diary and transferred to the appropriate files. (Not doctors appointments).

 

  • The school will work with students to protect them from prejudice, bullying and abuse, as stated in the relevant Policies.

 

  • A record of any regular extra intervention, physical, mental health or emotional will be recorded on the non-medical intervention sheet.

 

  • If a student is unwell and in bed, staff will set up a “record of observation” sheet to ensure that regular checks are made on the student.

 

  • To ensure that each child’s medical health and intimate care needs are met effectively, they will have a Health Plan which will be kept in their medical file and which will record any relevant medical or developmental history including any physical, emotional or mental health factors.

 

  • The school will liaise with the Health Protection Committee about overseas students and possible health screenings.
